Doing your own telephone wiring Note: I’m not familiar with the phone wiring conventions outside the U. In years gone past, it was the responsibility of the phone company not only to bring phone service to your house but to do the phone wiring within your house as well. This is no longer the case. When you order phone service to your house, the local phone company installs a network interface device, a sturdy grey plastic box usually mounted either in your basement or on an outside wall. You can do your inside wiring yourself, or you can pay the local phone company or a third party such as an electrician to do it for you. Doing residential phone wiring is easy, however, and the local phone company’s charges for this service are steep.
Home networking explained, part 3: Taking control of your wires
I can remember a few years ago calling a new phone order in to the phone company. The customer service person, explained to me the various charges. Then she outlined the extra charges for anything that would need to be done inside the home beyond the junction box. I had already pre-wired the house, but that certainly scared me.
I went back and checked all the wiring to make sure I did not need anything done inside the house. Phone jack wiring is not that difficult.

We can’t guarantee that our system will take care of everything no one knows what’s coming , but if you install the stuff we show here, you should be set for the next 25 years or so. You can install the system yourself using tools and materials found at a well-supplied home center. The key to this system is to feed two telephone and two coaxial cables from each wall jack to the central communication center so you can easily link any electronic components in the future. That means buying a lot of cable, but don’t worry—cable is relatively cheap.
There’s room in the telecommunication distribution box for other electronic enhancements too. At some point, you may want to add computer networking components, hardware to boost video signals and more cable splitters for connecting different components. Here’s the basic hardware you’ll need:
What do the yellow and black wires in a home telephone jack do?
Two wires normally referred to as a “pair” are needed for most telephone connections. One of the wires in a pair is referred to as the “tip” and the other is called the “ring”. Color code schemes are used to identify wires within a cable. You may encounter two different wire color schemes while working on your phone wiring.

Only a few basic tools are needed, and the parts are available at home-improvement stores. Your voice lines and Internet connection share the same cables. You can put an Internet connection anywhere you can put a phone, and vice-versa. It’s the phone company’s property and responsibility up to the network interface device, and from that point on it’s all yours.
It’s a way of combining traditional audio signals for the voice calls with digital communication for an Internet connection. The telecommunications company enables DSL on your line, and then it’s your problem to get the higher frequency digital signals from the company’s box into the house and to your computers. From the Pole to the House The phone company has a line running down the street. It might be an overhead line running from pole to pole, but in newer areas it may run underground.

If not, the Direct Current DC from your Central Office will find a short circuit across the ringer coils and will register a “false Busy. This frequency was derived by the average output of a hand-cranked magneto. Magneto telephones were once the most common form of telephone. Since the batteries were usually to be found inside of a magneto phone, or close by, the older form of telephone is called a Local Battery Set. When battery power was located in the Central Office, telephones were reconfigured to Central Energy, or Common Battery style.
With battery voltage ever-present on the telephone line, there could be no path through the telephone set if it was not being used, or On Hook. Only if the set were Off Hook would there be a current path that would signal Central to alert an Operator or bring in Dial Tone. By means of a Condenser, the problem of leakage through the ringer coils was solved.
The most common analog telephones in use today are Western Electric Licensed Style. All of the Networks in such apparatus will have the same letter codes, and most will have a 4-wire ringer. The Condenser in any modern analog network will always be identified by the letters “K” and “A. My advice here is aimed towards connecting both your existing line Line 1 and your new second line Line 2 on new or existing jacks at the locations of your existing jacks. This will provide you the most flexibility in determining how to use your expanded phone service. This advice is only applicable if your phone cable is normal station cable with two or more pairs of wire.
Most people will be able to add a second line to their existing jacks without installing any additional cable. Two wires one “pair” are needed for most phone line connections. Normal station cable what your phone tech may call “JK” used for residential installations has four wires two “pair”. Single line installations only use one pair, leaving the second pair available for the second line. You may find that your home was originally wired with both pairs connected to the jacks and is essentially “two-line ready”.
If you plan to “do it yourself”, I recommend you consider accomplishing all of your rewiring before actually ordering your second line from the phone company. This work is all fairly simple, but you’ll find that it may take more time than expected to accomplish.

The yellow and black wires also called the Halloween Pair were never used for standard telelphone service. Phones that offered 2-line service would use the second pair for the additional line. Modern telephone service still provides the correct ring signal, and the odds are that all the other phones in your house are of the electronic type that use virtually no ringing current. My bet is there is something wrong with the phone itself. Those old phones are very well built, the cockroaches will be using them to call their buddies after WWIII, so it’s probably a bad connection inside somewhere.
Although many phones today only have the red and green wires aka the Christmas Pair , it was very common for standard phones to have all four r,g,bk,y. Don’t know why, perhaps the same reason all network cable has 8 conductors when it really only uses 4 until the recent gbit anyway. They also have a ringer cicruit posted. Yup this all sounds right and I agree. I was thinking much of the same stuff reading the thread and then what I was going to say had been posted.
