You wander into the tackle shop to buy some hooks, and there in front of you is a huge array of sizes and variations. Well this is one market where hooks have mostly been developed to meet the real demands of different methods of fishing, and the type of fish targeted. So this article will try and de-mystify some main choices you may think about in front of the hook displays. Hook Sizes The numbers that define hook sizes can be confusing, but the system is really very simple. Hook sizes are based on a nominal hook size of zero. Hook sizes with a number followed by a zero increase in size as the number goes up.

Posted on November 9, Things are going well for saltwater anglers in North Florida. The headliners of the gulf coast shallows, speckled trout, are chunky, abundant, and biting. The fall mackerel run has been a good one, and plenty of big macks are still being pulled from banks and reefs a short run from shore. Out deeper, bottom fishers are wrestling increasing numbers of good grouper from water to feet deep. With lakes still in nice shape level-wise, freshwater fishers feel that their finny targets should, too, be biting.
But, while bass action is decent and slowly improving, fans of speckled perch are perplexed. Specks typically go on an all-out feed when the November winds begin to blow cool, hunting down minnow schools out in mid-lake depths. Nobody has a good theory as to why the crappie fishing is so slow during the prime season, but they remain hopeful that the specks will soon hit their fall feeding stride. In many ways, speckled trout are the saltwater equivalent of the speckled perch, and they are certainly cooperating better than their smaller freshwater counterparts.
While pre-fishing for reds, a number of teams have caught hefty trout instead. The soft twitchbaits Rick Pena and Jeff Taylor cast near Steinhatchee last weekend in hopes of attracting top-slot reds drew strikes instead from big trout.

Sliders Bait These are the basics, say for catching fish off of the bottom, such as channel catfish, carp, or the occasional bass or panfish. You can often find rod and reel combinations, sometimes already pre-spooled with fishing line. This can be great because everything is already matched up just right for you and nearly ready to go fishing. I would suggest a medium action fishing rod.
Match that with a spinning reel, and let’s say about 10 pound test monofilament fishing line. The rod and reel both should state that they will accommodate 10 pound test line. A slider is optional, but I suggest it because it can make life a little easier for you out on the water. I’ll explain in just a moment. You can tie your own leaders to your hooks, or get yourself the hooks that are already pre-snelled with a leader. That should be straight forward and very simple. The fishing line is a little difficult to see in the pictures, so I’m using a shoe lace to demonstrate here.
The arbor knot is about the best choice for tying line to the spool.

Peter Pakula — Pakula Tackle Added by Kosta Linardos on October 7, When deciding how to present an informative piece for the novice or even experienced angler wanting to target billfish, the idea of interviewing Peter Pakula seemed like the perfect start. The man has caught more billfish than most people alive: His techniques and products have been adopted and used on a worldwide scale and in the fishing world Pakula is a household name.
I have to point out what a patient man he is: I cancelled our proposed interview five times before it finally took place, and where most would have told me where to go and stick my publication, he was kind enough to be very generous with his time and grant me a sixth meeting. So please read on and enjoy this interview. How did you get into fishing in the first place?

In fact, with braided line and relatively small high-performance reels that pack a punch, learning how to shark fish is easier than ever before. Shark Fishing Tackle Big game tackle has really evolved over the last few years. The size of the equipment that we used to use for striped bass, we now use for school bluefin tuna, and what we used for school bluefin tuna, we can now use for sharks.
PowerPro pound-test is the same diameter as pound-test monofilament. We can spool yards of pound test braid onto reels that would only be able to hold yards of pound-test monofilament. This allows us to use smaller reels but have the same amount of line that we had on larger, heavier reels. Adding a skirt above the bait will often entice more bites. The advancements in fishing lines have pushed reel manufacturers to produce lighter, stronger, smaller and more powerful reels.
The tackle manufacturers have beefed up the drags on the smaller reels to accommodate braided lines and powerful fish. On the Insufishent Funds charter boats , we traded in our large wide reels for much smaller Shimano Talica 25s loaded with more than yards of pound-test braided line with a to yard topshot of pound-test monofilament. This is a difference of almost 3 pounds in the weight of the reel alone! This not only cuts the weight of our outfit in half, but it also gives us the ability to set the hook with much more control and a lot less stretch than when we used straight monofilament.
Now my anglers are fighting the fish and not the rod and reel. The rod advancements have changed dramatically, as well.
