In reality, a lot of these variables are mutually exclusive: If you want maximum power output, be prepared to pay more for the drivers and sacrifice some frequency response. Keep these things in mind as you read over the next sections. A Note on Speaker Selection Don’t skimp too much on the speakers: However you can have all of the above qualities without spending a fortune. A word to the wise:

Tube Stuff Suppliers Appendix B. Tube amps have always been the amplifier of choice for the working musician. Musical myth has ascribed almost magical tone to them. While the results may not be entirely magic, tubes do have a sound that is different from solid state amplifiers, and one that happens to make amplified music sound better to the human ears and brain.

The following is the most basic system. It involves a head unit HU and 2 pairs of speakers which are driven by the head unit’s internal amplifier. You can see that the battery terminal of the HU is connected to a constant source of power the battery with an inline fuse. The accessory wire for the HU is connected to a power source which only has power when the ignition switch is in the ‘on’ or ‘acc’ positions.

The battery and accessory connections will not be shown in the following diagrams but will be the same for all of the systems. The lines point to the speakers but the exact connection isn’t shown. The colored speaker wires from the HU are going to be connected to the positive speaker terminal of the speaker. The black or darker speaker wire will be connected to the negative speaker terminal. Of course, this is just a generic type of diagram and you should consult the wiring diagram which was supplied with the HU.

Using the HU’s internal amplifier and an external amplifier: In this diagram, you see that the front speakers are being driven from the HU’s internal amplifier and a pair of rear speakers are being powered by an external amplifier. This type of system has very little chance of sounding good. If the amplifier is being used because more volume is desired and the front and rear speakers are roughly equivalent in efficiency then the front speaker’s amplifier will probably be driven into clipping well before the external amplifier reaches clipping.

If the HU’s fader is turned toward the rear amplified speakers, you may get better sound quality or at least less clipping from the internal amplifier but the image will be from the rear of the vehicle which is generally undesirable.

Class AB amps combine the good points of class A and B amps. They have the improved efficiency of class B amps and distortion performance that is a lot closer to that of a class A amp. With such amplifiers, distortion is worst when the signal is low, and generally lowest when the signal is just reaching the point of clipping. Class AB amps like class B use pairs of transistors, both of them being biased slightly ON so that the crossover distortion associated with Class B amps is largely eliminated.

Class C amps are never used for audio circuits. They are commonly used in RF circuits. Class C amplifiers operate the output transistor in a state that results in tremendous distortion it would be totally unsuitable for audio reproduction. However, the RF circuits where Class C amps are used employ filtering so that the final signal is completely acceptable. Class C amps are quite efficient. Due to improvements in the speed, power capacity and efficiency of modern semiconductor devices, applications using Class D amps have become affordable for the common person.

Whereas the aforementioned classes of amplifier operate the semiconductor devices in the linear mode, Class D amplifiers operate the output semiconductor devices as switches ON or OFF. In a Class D amplifier, the input signal is compared with a high frequency triangle wave, resulting in the generation of a Pulse Width Modulation PWM type signal. The output of the filter drives the speaker.

One-Wire Alternators: Are They Better Or Just Easier To Hook up?

You can use a flat screen TV. You can use a movie projector and movie screen. Basically anything you want to use to view either TV or a movie or sports programming. This is a stereo amplifier which you can connect your speakers and subwoofer.

That speaker impedance rating on your towers and bookshelf speakers is held up as a mystery—something strange and mystic, yet dangerous. “You’ll blow up your receiver!” says one “expert”.“Bah! You can run anything you want, just set that switch in the back to 4-ohms” says another. The bottom line is that people are confused about speaker impedance.

Just what is tone? What is a good tone and how do you achieve it? Which amps you should choose for your setup and how to get the tones you want. We also looked at the importance of choosing the right guitar — not only for your technique and rig but also for inspiration to play and create music. Check out part 1 and part 2. Amps People tend to prioritize guitars and a bunch of pedals and forget the importance of a good sounding amp. Choosing the right amp for your setup is crucial for getting the tones you want from your guitar and pedals.

I strongly suggest that you buy a guitar and amp before you spend all your savings on pedals. This will ensure the best fundament for your tones and playing.

Share on Facebook Graphic equalizers became popular in home audio applications in the late s and throughout the s. They can be easily recognized by their series of slide controls that divide the frequency generally from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, the approximate range of human hearing. The slide controls are centered at zero and slide up and down from zero to 3 db. Hooking up a graphic equalizer to a stereo receiver is a relatively straightforward and simple process.

Graphic equalizers allow you to fine-tune your audio experience. The units came from the factory with easily removable RCA connectors in place. To hook up a graphic equalizer to such a unit, remove the plugs and connect one pair of audio cables to the pre-amp output and the other end into the left and right channel inputs on the rear panel of the graphic equalizer. Plug a second pair of audio cables from the left and right channel inputs of the amp to the output channels on the back of the graphic equalizer.

As you can see, the two speakers are in “series” with the each other. How to Connect 2 speakers in Parallel and Series. Below is a table showing how to wire up two speakers in parallel and series for common scenarios.

Most receivers have either preamp-in and preamp-out connections or tape monitor connections. In most cases, these are the best way to connect an equalizer to your stereo. Connecting to the tape monitor channels will require connection to only your receiver. Learn how to hook up an equalizer to the receiver instead. To run a signal from your stereo receiver to the equalizer and then to your amplifier, you will need 2 sets of RCA cable the same kind that is usually used to connect source components like turntables and CD players.

The length of the RCA cables should match the length of the distance between the receiver and the equalizer. Connect one pair of cables to the pre-amp output channels on the receiver and the other end of the cable to the left and right channel inputs on the equalizer. You will usually find these channels on the rear of the equalizer. Right channel jacks will usually take the red colored RCA plug while left channel should take white or black RCA plugs.

Connect the other pair of cables from the output channels on the back of the equalizer to the left and right input channels on the amplifier. The amplifier should remain connected to the receiver with an RCA cable between the amplifier outputs and the amp inputs on the receiver. This effectively creates a loop from the receiver through the equalizer and amplifier and back to the receiver.

Turn on all three components and adjust the equalizer knobs according to your preferences.

It shows on the picture by the two AC outputs 7 and 8. I cannot find a download for the manual so I cannot confirm that both of these AC outputs are milliamps but this is what it looks like from the data on their website. Will this damage the unit? The amp comes with FX loop but currently my new setup is running everything upfront.

Do you need really huge speakers, and are they worth it? Yes they are…at all costs. The bigger the better! Monstrous, gigantic speakers sitting three feet away from your face and pumping out dB of ear-bleeding sound is exactly what you need! Just ask your spouse or the person sitting next to you. They ran out of the room screaming?

The truth is, I once downsized my speakers when I went from a larger room to a new home where my theater needed to shrink. If you want to understand anything about room acoustics, remember this: Loudspeakers always interact with the room in which they are placed. That means that if you place really large speakers in a small room, the room is going to have an effect on the sound produced.

So how do you size up the speakers to the room? Well, you start with the room. Understanding your room is a big deal. The next things to look at are the dimensions and the listening position.

Most all stereo receivers, amplifiers, and standard speakers (i.e., ones that are able to receive signals through speaker wire connections) feature terminals on the back for connecting speaker terminals are either the spring clip or binding post type.

Speaker Connections for proper impedance match A note about amplifiers: You should always use the recommended load for your amplifier. However, if you must use a load other than the recommended load, here is a short guide. Most solid-state amplifiers would rather look at an open circuit no speaker at all than a load. Therefore, you can usually use a load that is higher than the recommended load. Do not use a lower impedance load, as this could cause serious damage to your SS amp. On the other hand, most tube amplifiers need a load to avoid transformer or tube socket damage.

If a mismatch can not be avoided on a tube amp, it is better to go towards a lower impedance rather than too high of a speaker impedance. This may stress the tubes some, but, tubes are cheaper than transformers. As the graphic shows, you connect the positive wire to speaker A’s positive terminal, connect a wire from speaker A’s negative terminal to speaker B’s positive wire, and then connect the negative wire to the negative terminal of speaker B.

You could continue this string for as many speakers that you have available, however, it may not be very practical. The impedances add in a series connection.
